Intel's new 4th generation Core processors reach India

Intel has announced that laptops and desktop PCs powered by its 4th generation Core processor based on Haswell architecture are now available in India.
Haswell, which is successor to Ivy Bridge processors currently found in mainstream laptops and desktops, doesn't offer much advantage in terms of performance over its predecessors.
However, it is more power efficient and offers significantly better battery life, something that should help Intel take on the popularity of tablets in the market. Intel said that Haswell processor in laptops deliver up to 50 per cent increase in battery life in active workloads over the previous generation
The company added that due to its power efficiency Haswell will enable manufacturersAcer, Lenovo, Dell and HP to create thinner and lighter devices that could also serve as tablets.
Intel South Asia managing director Debjani Ghosh said that Haswell processor are one of the most power-efficient chips the company had created. "The 4th Generation Intel Core processors offer the most significant gain in battery life ever achieved by Intel, up to double the graphics and significant CPU performance improvements that will deliver an exciting user experience," she said.

Zen Ultrafone 701HD review: Best value for money

Zen Mobiles is not a well-known phone brand. It is a local phone maker, justMicromax and Spice though not as popular, and mostly deals in low-cost feature phones. But justother local phone makers, Zen too sees a window of opportunity in the Android and the smartphone boom that the OS has sparked.

Ultrafone 701HD is an attempt by Zen Mobile to cash in on the demand for affordable smartphones in the country. On paper, Ultrafone 701HD is similar to some of the other smartphones sold by the local OEMs. Quad-core processor? Check. Android? Check. An HD screen? Check. And an 8MP camera? Yes, the device has that.

So why should you pick (or not pick) it over the devices sold by the likes of Micromax, Karbonn and Spice, which seems to have better brand recognition? Read on to know...

Good build quality
As we noted earlier, there is nothing special in Ultrafone 701HD on paper compared to other similar phones available in the market. But then it is not required. Most of the Android phones sold by local OEMs in Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 price bracket have decent hardware. The real question is how these devices have been put together and if the hardware has been used to its full potential?

For Ultrafone 701HD, the answer to this question is a yes. The body of the phone is built matte plastic that doesn't feel cheap. The back cover has a soft rubber-like coating that is impervious to finger prints and feels better than the glossy plastic many budget phones use. The screen of the phone is encased in a thin metal strip with chrome polish. Ultrafone 701HD is a big phone with its screen measuring 5-inch diagonally. Under the screen, there are three standard buttons - home, back and menu.

Microsoft set to launch Windows 8.1 preview

Microsoft is giving people a peek into Windows 8.1, a free update that promises to address some of the gripes people have with the latest version of the company's flagship operating system.
Although the preview version of Windows 8.1 is meant for Microsoft's partners and other technology developers, anyone will be able to download it for free, exactly eight months since desktops, laptops and tablets with Windows 8 went on sale. The version of the Windows 8.1 update meant for the general public will come out later in the year, though a specific date hasn't been announced.
Many of the new features have been shown off already. A three-day Build conference, which in San Francisco, will give Microsoft developers a chance to learn more about the new system and try it out. It also will give the company a chance to explain some of the reasoning behind the update and sell developers on Microsoft's ambitions to regain relevance lost to Apple's iPad and various devices running Google's Android software.
There's also speculation that Microsoft could show off a new, smaller version of its Surface tablet computers. One of the new features in Windows 8.1 is the ability to work well on smaller-screen devices.

Windows 8, which was released October 26, was meant to be Microsoft's answer to changing customer behaviors and the rise of tablet computers. The operating system emphasizes touch controls over the mouse and the keyboard, which had been the main way people have interacted with their personal computers since the 1980s.
But some people have been put off by the radical makeover.
Although Microsoft has said it has sold more than 100 million Windows 8 licenses so far, some analysts have blamed the lackluster response to the operating system for a steep drop in PC sales in the first three months of the year, the worst drop since tracking by outside research firms began in 1994.

Samsung is expanding its lineup of tablet computers and making them look moreits Galaxy smartphones, as it hopes to translate its success in phones to the tablet market,Apple is dominant.

Samsung Electronics, the second-largest maker of tablets after Apple, said it is putting three new tablets in the Galaxy Tab 3 series on sale in the US on July 7. The cheapest, a $199 device, will have a screen that measures 7 inches diagonally. An 8-inch model will go for $299 and a 10-inch one for $399.

"Our goal is to attract Galaxy smartphone users, and to make it the ultimate smartphone accessory," said Shoneel Kolhatkar, director of product planning at Samsung Mobile.

The "Tab" line is Samsung's value brand, undercutting the price of similar Apple models. Samsung's premium tablets are in the "Note" line, which include styluses. The 7-inch and 10-inch tablets had "Tab 2" equivalents, but the 8-inch model is new, and coincides closely in size with Apple's iPad Mini, which came out late last year.

The new tablets have the same three buttons on the front as the Galaxy smartphones. Last year's Tab 2 had no physical buttons on the front, as encouraged by Google, which supplies the Android software.

Sony Vaio Pro 13 Touch review

Not everyone wants to buy an Apple laptop, but serious Windows 8 competitors to the MacBook Air have been few and far between.

When Windows 8 systems started rolling out last year, it seemed like PC manufacturers spent all their efforts trying to make some sort of hybrid or convertible laptop. For their regular clamshell notebooks, the most they did was install Windows 8 and put in a touch screen.

But, based on the Sony Vaio Pro 13 Touch ultrabook (and its smaller linemate, the Pro 11), it looks like the wait for some interesting ultrabooks might be over thanks to the launch of Intel's fourth-gen Core i-series processors.

Updated: iOS 7 release date, news and rumours

With Apple's WWDC 2013 developer conference taking place over the coming days, we're about to learn more details on the forthcoming iOS 7 update for the the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
The last major iOS 6 update for Apple's mobile devices was mostly hit, but there was a big Maps-shaped miss.
Lots of people were rightly angry about Apple ditching Google data, but beyond that mis-step there were things to like: a more useful Siri (App launching plus the recognition that a world exists outside of the USA), shared Photo Streams, handy Phone app controls such as 'send to voicemail', and major improvements to Mail, Safari, accessibility and the Camera app.
iOS 7 release date
it looks like the new operating system might be running a little behind schedule. John Gruber believes that iOS 7 is "running behind", with engineers being pulled from OS X 10.9 to work on it.
We're expecting a September or October release date for iOS 7 in line with previous releases. We'll almost certainly see a reveal at WWDC. Apple has promised to give devs "an in-depth look at what's next in iOS and OS X", Mobile web traffickers such as Onswipe have already reported seeing iOS 7 pop up in their logs.

We now know nearly everything there is to know about the external design of the Nokia Lumia EOS, the Windows Phone powered follow up to 808 PureView that featured a 41 megapixel sensor, thanks to new photos.
Two new sets of photos detailing the alleged design of the Nokia Lumia EOS have surfaced showcasing the color hues and entire body styling of the device.
The first set, which originate from GSM Arena, feature the same casing and components that were leaked earlier this week, albeit assembled. Instead of yellow, this device’s polycarbonate shell seems to be matte black. As hypothesized yesterday, it does appear as the device will ship with Xenon flash for taking pictures as it its flash looks identical to the Xenon flash module included in the Lumia 928.

THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE NEW EDITION (PAPERBACK) PRICE: RS.325
With his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey initiated a shift in the focus of self-help books written in the 20th Century.
In the book, Stephen Covey lists seven habits that each person should develop in order to be effective. These are sequential steps that need to be carefully followed for overall personal development. His philosophy states that our characters are shaped by our habits which include three major things:
Skills - They give us the ability to put our knowledge to practical use
Knowledge - It provides the necessary information and forethought
Desire - A key motivating factor, it serves as the catalyst for all human actions
In a time when more emphasis was laid on character and problem solving rather than on personality development and related techniques, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People brought in a fresh perspective towards the path to success. Covey’s book integrates both character and personality ethics together, for a person to be successful.
In his book, Covey stresses on the fact that a society where individuals are wholly  independent and individualistic would not be effective in the long run. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People focuses on teamwork rather than individual development.

The State of the Nation Ebook From Flipkart

A definitive, analytical and meticulous account of the present state of the nation – from a constitutional perspective – by one of India’s most respected legal luminaries

An ardent defender of the Constitution of India, Fali Nariman has today attained the status of an outstanding lawyer who strongly believes in the rule of the law and stands by his convictions. In this timely volume, the author highlights crucial issues that the legislature, the executive, judiciary, the bar and the common people have to deal with virtually on a day-to-day basis. His main focus is on corruption at various levels and in ‘hallowed’ institutions, including the judiciary.

The author contends that the legislative and executive wings of the government – the elected representatives of the people – were (and are) expected to provide for the welfare of the people. He points out that they have failed miserably simply because making of laws is not enough; applying and enforcing laws – which are also the primary duties of the government – have left much to be desired. Consequently, it is the judiciary that tells the government when and how to distribute excess food, what crops to grow and what not to grow, which economic projects are good for the country and which are not, and what fuel should be used in our vehicles and whether 2G/3G licences should be allotted only through auctions! The judiciary is hence accused of overreach!

Apple iPhone sales jump 400% in India

Equal monthly installments and cash back schemes have worked wonders for Apple in India as iPhone's monthly sales have risen by 300% to 400% over the last few months. The Cupertino-based company has managed to dramatically push up its sales by figuring out trends of consumer demand and changing the iPhone's perception from being a high-end product to an affordable one.

Compared to average monthly sales of 70,000-80,000 smartphones before the EMI schemes were offered to consumers in India iPhone sales have zoomed up to stratospheric levels, analysts at Credit Suisse said. "From our channel checks we believe that iPhone sales are nearing 400,000 units per month in India - that is nearly 3% share of handset sales for a single top-end product in a market that has long been dominated by low-end feature phones," Credit Suisse's research analyst Sunil Tirumalai said in a note to clients that was accessed by ET.

Apps by Bangalore teen make it to Microsoft store

'Writing a bug-free C# code to develop an app' might sound distressing to many, but Pratik Mohapatra, 15, excels in the art. Born in a generation of touch screens and social media, the teenager has developed a number of major ideas, some of them finding space on Microsoft's app store as well.
The latest by the 10th grader from National Public School, Koramangala, is 'Calculator Hub' - an app with a combination of six calculators on one screen.
"This app gives a variety of options to the user, that too on the same screen of the phone. It includes a BMI Calculator with two options, and you just have to swipe to change, a temperature conversion calculator, a scientific calculator, an age calculator and calculators for simple interest and compound interest. This app was published by Microsoft very recently," Pratik explains.

Why a calculator app? "My dad bought an Android phone and told me he didn't like the calculator at all. He didn't find it comfortable to use and advised me to try and make a calculator app. I started developing apps for Windows phones as I had experience in C#. Moreover, there was no such concept before in the store. I think this is the first app to feature such a thing," says Pratik, who started developing apps at the age of 13.
