Google sells Motorola unit to Lenovo for $2.9B

Google is unloading Motorola Mobility onto Chinese PC maker Lenovo.
Google confirmed on its site that it has sold Motorola for $2.91 billion, consisting of $660 million in cash and $750 million in Lenovo shares, with the remaining $1.5 billion paid in the form of a three-year promissory note. Reuters earlier reported on the deal.
Lenovo gets the Motorola brand, as well as its portfolio of devices, including the Moto X and Moto G. In addition, it will also receive more than 2,000 patent assets, while Google will retain control of a majority of the patents it originally obtained when it acquired Motorola several years ago.
A deal instantly gives Lenovo, which has a thriving smartphone business in China but few other places, an established global brand. Google, meanwhile, will shed a business that has continually dragged down its profits.

The deal marks one of the worst investments in Google's history. In 2012, Google completed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. At the time, it was thought that the primary reason for the acquisition was the treasure trove of Motorola patents that would help Google defend it and its partners against Apple.

Apple's iPhone 'shortfall'? Blame Verizon, AT&T

A decline in smartphone sales at Verizon Wireless and AT&T is the primary culprit for iPhone sales that some on Wall Street have deemed disappointing.
That's according to Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt, who calculated that 80 percent of the shortfall could be attributed to the two larger carriers, which sell the iPhone.

Apple posted record sales of 51 million iPhones in its fiscal first quarter, but Wall Street had expected sales of 55 million, and ultimately punished the stock for the shortfall.
AT&T posted fourth-quarter results on Tuesday, reporting a 22.5 percent decline in smartphone sales from a year ago. The number was a more severe decline than at Verizon, which saw a 10 percent decline in smartphone sales.
"We believe Apple likely held or took share at both carriers as has been the trend through the year," McCourt said in a research note.
If so, Apple likely sold about 12 million iPhones versus 15 million iPhones from a year ago, according to McCourt.
Verizon and AT&T no longer break out iPhone sales, so it's difficult to figure out exactly how many were sold in the fourth quarter. When factoring his projections for growth, McCourt said that AT&T and Verizon likely accounted for 4 million of his estimated 5 million shortfall in iPhone sales.

AVG Anti-Virus 2014 Review

AVG Technologies began in 1991 and is now one of the biggest players in the antivirus software market with corporate offices in Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States. AVG Anti-Virus is one of a handful of the best-performing antivirus software products in the world.

One of the most respected and objective independent IT-security institutes, AV-Test, torture tested AVG Anti-Virus and scored it for its ability to protect and repair. AV-Test also tested AVG for usability. The test results show that AVG is one of the very best-performing antivirus software products and makes it into the top handful of products in its category.

AVG Anti-Virus software uses layers of protection. The first layer is traditional antivirus, which recognizes threats by matching them to a database of known threats. It also defends against spyware and adware in order to protect personal information. Another layer, AVG Resident Shield, prevents you from opening infected files. Every day there are new threats that aren’t in any antivirus software vendor’s database. AVG collects data on fast-breaking infections from the installed base of users who opt to share zero-day data and then updates customer PCs automatically. This security product monitors your protection level and reports back to the AVG lab if it finds a problem. The alert will pop up an Auto-Fix button, and if you press it, AVG will make the correction and set itself back to the best protection mode.

AVG does not intrude on you unnecessarily. It watches for idle time before it tries to scan. And it is intelligent enough to ignore any files that it has already scanned. It has a game mode so that you can concentrate on a multiplayer game without enduring scheduled updates and scans. AVG also guards your digital gaming profiles against hackers who crawl the web to steal your World of Warcraft pets and sell them for real money.

F-Secure Anti-Virus 2014 Review

F-Secure Anti-Virus is among the best antivirus software programs. It is streamlined, fast and effective. With advanced protection technology and additional integrated security features, F-Secure protects against viruses, spyware, worms and Trojans. F-Secure can also locate and eliminate rootkits. This antivirus software also protects against viruses spread through emails, cookies or malware that attempts to infiltrate the PC registry.

AV-Test out of Germany places F-Secure among the leaders when it comes to performance. F-Secure is also among the handful of antivirus software products to win an Advanced A+ rating from AV Comparatives. The Virus Bulletin found F-Secure right on par with most of the best antivirus software competitors.

Taking F-Secure Anti-Virus from start to scanning is straightforward. The installer automatically removes any other antivirus software you have installed (as they interfere with each other). The software is a fairly resource-conscious program and protects without sacrificing resources.

Anti-Virus from F-Secure accommodates simple navigation and makes it easy to schedule specific scans or adjust settings. The main dashboard features quick access to the essentials (scan, update and statistics) and is visually striking. Most of the time you won’t even have F-Secure open since the updates and scans run automatically. The easy-to-understand icon in the lower-right taskbar will help you comprehend the status of your security. F-Secure uses a protection network, DeepGuard 2.0, which collects new threats in the cloud and pushes out updates to the entire user community.

F-Secure Anti-Virus uses heuristics, proactive protection against zero-hour threats that go undetected by the current virus signatures. All files accessed or opened on your computer are scanned by F-Secure’s on-access scanning. But you can always perform a manual scan. If you want to scan a specific file or folder, simply right-click on it and scan it immediately. F-Secure can scan compressed files and files on removable drives.

Norton AntiVirus 2014 Review

Norton AntiVirus is effective antivirus software from Symantec. It protects against viruses, worms, bots and spyware. Norton AntiVirus is easy to install and use. It scans quickly. You can get free customer support every day and at any hour. Extensive testing by AV-Test labs in Germany reveals that Norton Antivirus competes at the head of the class in terms of its ease of use, ability to protect against malware and ability to disinfect machines that are already infected. It wins the TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award.

After you review the list of features in an antivirus software product, the essential questions remain: How well does it protect? How good is it at repair? Is it highly usable or not? Has anyone objectively tested it? Norton AntiVirus received the West Coast Labs Checkmark for antivirus desktop and anti-Trojan tests. It also achieved the Advanced Award from AV Comparatives.

It is significant that Norton is AV-Test Certified. AV-Test is a respected independent laboratory in Germany that tests antivirus software and researches the best products and procedures to detect malware. The test network in the lab is quite elaborate with a couple of dozen servers and almost 300 workstations. The lab has collected 100 million pieces of clean test data and 50 million pieces of malicious test data during the past 15 years. Every day, AV-Test adds 50,000 new pieces of malware to its collection of malicious test data.

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2014 Review

If you’re looking for the best antivirus software, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is it. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is the best antivirus software and our TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award winner. It is top-tier antivirus software with superior protection and performance. It is good for advanced users looking to control the whole process manually or for average users who want Bitdefender to make the decisions. Bitdefender provides protection and peace of mind without taxing your PC's performance or your paycheck.

Installation is quick and includes step-by-step instructions. The process includes a pre-installation scan and doesn’t require a reboot before you’re up and running. The user interface is elegant. You can drag and drop modules to perform actions directly from the main window. The application uses a feature called Autopilot to make security-related decisions without prompting you for responses. There is nothing to configure, no alerts and no pop-ups. If you choose to make any manual changes to the security settings, Autopilot shuts itself off in the same way that your car's cruise control cancels itself if you tap the brakes.

Apple MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2013) review: Apple's high-end laptop gets better battery life and a lower price

The good: New Intel fourth-gen CPUs help the updated MacBook Air achieve amazing battery life. The multitouch trackpad is still the industry's best, and even better, the 13-inch MacBook Air now starts at $100 less than the previous model.
The bad: Newer features such as touch screens and higher-resolution displays are still missing. The ultrabook competition is catching up, in terms of design.
The bottom line: Apple keeps the latest MacBook Air updates on the inside, but greatly improved battery life and a lower starting price make up for a lack of flashy design changes.

t may be a case of "the more things change, the more they stay the same."

The new 2013 versions of both the 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air look very familiar indeed, as these slim systems have hardly changed at all physically over the past few generations.

The Air was the only Apple laptop line to get a June 2013 update at Apple's WWDC conference. At first glance, it looks like a relatively minor set of changes, with the primary selling point being a move to Intel's new fourth-generation Core i-series CPUs, also known by the code name Haswell. There is, however, one very important difference in the new models, and one that's especially noteworthy if you spend a lot of time on the road and away from your power adapter.

We've previously tested Haswell chips in a few laptops and been impressed by both the performance and battery life gains (to be realistic, the latter is much more important for consumers). If you add Haswell to Apple's already-stellar battery life reputation, you get a system, in the 13-inch Air, that Apple claims will run for up to 12 hours, and in our tests (spoiler alert) ran even longer.

Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus review:High-resolution, small-footprint premium laptop

The good: The Ativ Book 9 Plus laptop has a sturdy, slim design, ultra-high-res touch screen, and really good battery life.
The bad: Costs several hundred more than we’d prefer; shrunken HDMI port; doesn’t convert to a tablet form -- strictly a laptop.
The bottom line: If you’re just looking for an all-around excellently made Windows touch ultrabook and don’t mind that it's on the expensive side (and doesn’t convert to a tablet), the improved Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus is worth the investment.

Take a beautiful Windows ultrabook design. Add a super-high-resolution touch screen and longer-battery-life Intel Haswell processor. What could be wrong with that?

Nothing at all. The Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus is a rebirth of the Book 9/Series 9, a laptop line we’ve loved for years because of its solid shape, slim design, and strong performance. Samsung’s rebranding of Windows laptops to “Ativ” is a little confusing, as is the splitting of the line into two thin laptops: the Book 9 Lite and Book 9 Plus. The Lite, which I’ve already reviewed, is plastic, has an AMD processor, and is a different type of product, but costs around $750. The Plus is a far better ultrabook, but it’s $1,399, nearly twice the price. It comes with what amounts to the New Standard in premium Windows ultrabooks: a greater-than-1080p 3,200x1,800-resolution touch screen, plus improved battery life thanks to a Intel Haswell Core i5 processor inside.

Mystery 5.5-inch Samsung smartphone shows up in India

Samsung has been linked to several potential handsets that it may launch at MWC 2014, and now there's more news of a big screened smartphone - although one unlikely to challenge the Galaxy Note 3.
Popping up on Indian site Zauba, the handset goes by the moniker Samsung GT-I9405, and it's apparently touched down in India "for testing and evaluation."
Other than the 5.5-inch screen size, the leak gives very little away about the handset, but considering its ID doesn't fall in line with either of Samsung's flagships products (the Galaxy S4 is the I9500) it's not going to be the Galaxy S5 or a direct relation to the Note 3 (N9000).
Who are you?
We've seen reports suggesting a Galaxy Note 3 Neo, Note 3 Lite, Galaxy Grand Neo and Galaxy Grand 2 - could this latest leak be linked to one of these - or is it something completely different?
Samsung likes to launch a phone for every single segment of the market, so the GT-I9405 could well be a handset engineered to plug a hole in a specific market, rather than try to dominate globally.
TechRadar will be out in full force at MWC 2014, and we'll be reporting live on all the new phones and tablets, including anything from the Samsung booth.

Micromax A200 smartphone's alleged specifications out

Micromax is reportedly working on a new budget smartphone. Allegedly called MicromaxA200, the upcoming Android smartphone will sport a 4.7-inch HD screen with Gorilla Glass 2 protection.
According to Twitter user MMXNewscaster, A200 will be powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. On camera front, the smartphone will have an 8MP camera at the back and a 5MP in the front.
Micromax A200 smartphone will come with 4GB internal storage and an 1800mAh battery. It will be just 7.9mm thick (for context, the Micromax Canvas Turbo is 8.6mm thick).

The Twitter user with the handle 'MMXNewscaster' has been behind several Micromax devices-related leaks in the past too.
The Twitter handle has also posted a render of the phone. Going by the render image, the alleged Micromax A200 looks similar to other phones in the Canvas series with rounded corners and three capacitive hardware buttons for navigation.
