Next-gen iPhone may have refocusable photos

Lytro invented the technology, Nokia uses it and now Apple seems set to join the fray. The iPhone maker has been awarded a patent for refocusable imaging technology, popularly called light-field technology, which allows a user to change focus after an image has been taken.

The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted Apple a patent for a "digital camera including refocusable imaging mode adaptor." The patent also reportedly notes the inclusion of such a system in portable devices, like iPhone.
The light-field imaging technology was introduced by camera maker Lytro over two years back. Apple founder and former CEO Steve Jobs is believed to have liked the camera and invited Lytro's CEO Ren Ng for a live demonstration of the technology. According to Jobs biography, photography is one of the industry that he wanted to revolutionize.
Apple's patent filing too acknowledges that the technology has been developed by Lytro, but says that the image quality and resolution can be improved.

Click photos at speed of light with this camera

An inexpensive multi-purpose 'nano-camera' that can operate at the speed of light has been developed by a team of MIT researchers, including Indian-origin scientists.

The $ 500 camera could be used in medical imaging and collision-avoidance detectors for cars, and to improve the accuracy of motion tracking and gesture-recognition devices used in interactive gaming.
The three-dimensional camera was developed by researchers in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab.
The camera is based on "Time of Flight" technology in which the location of objects is calculated by how long it takes a light signal to reflect off a surface and return to the sensor.
However, unlike existing devices based on this technology, the new camera is not fooled by rain, fog, or even translucent objects, said co-author Achuta Kadambi.

China Mobile to launch 4G services on Dec 18: Report

China Mobile, the world's largest mobile carrier by number of users, will begin commercial services of its high-speed 4G network on December 18, the Shanghai Daily reported.

China Mobile, whose 759 million users make up 62 percent of China's total 1.2 billion mobile subscribers, will launch its 4G service first in Beijing, Guangzhou and Chongqing, the newspaper cited a China Mobile official in Shanghai as saying.

The government is expected to issue licenses for 4G before China Mobile's services start, the report said.

These licenses would mainly benefit China Mobile, as they are expected to be for its Chinese-made 4G standard rather than the international standard rivals China Unicom and China Telecom are chiefly using to build their networks.

Growing smartphone users in India to help app market: Xcube Labs

The exponential growth of smartphone users in India will help the mobile applications market to expand in the country, enterprise mobility solutions firm Xcube Labs said.

"As per current estimates, we're expected to have close to 400 million smartphones in use in India by 2016. This is an impressive figure and it will eventually lead to development of a more robust mobile app market in the country," Xcube Labs CEO Bharath Lingam told PTI.

India did not start out being the country with one of the largest base of mobile users; however, it surpassed most of the first world countries in a short span of time once carrier prices as well as the handset prices dropped, he added.

"We see a similar opportunity for mobile apps in India. The growth of mobile apps in India is driven by the growth of smartphones, availability of bandwidth and of local content and relevance of global apps to this ecosystem," Lingam said.

India, which has the world's second largest mobile phone user base, saw dip in feature phone sales for the first time in the July-September quarter as smartphones continue to capture the consumer interest.

According to a report by CyberMedia Research ( CMR), mobile handset shipments grew 10.9 per cent to 62.9 million units during July-September 2013. Of the total, 51.8 million units were feature phones, while 11.1 million were smartphones.

Sony Xperia Z1S price, launch date revealed

Just a week after the specifications and images of Sony's upcoming Xperia Z1S smartphone hit the internet, the handset's price and launch date have been revealed. Xperia Z1S is the Japanese company's smartphone with top-end specs, but a relatively smaller screen.

A user on a Chinese forum has posted new images of the Xperia Z1S along with its tentative launch period and price. The handset will reportedly cost 3,600 yuan (or $590). This is just a little less than the 3,820 yuan ($630) price tag of the current top model, Xperia Z1.

Sony is likely to launch the smartphone in the first quarter of next year, according to the report.
The Xperia Z1S is said to have a 4.3-inch 720p display, run on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) and pack a 2,300mAh battery. It will share features like a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chipset, 2GB RAM and 20.7MP camera with its bigger sibling Xperia Z1.

Samsung Galaxy S5 metal frame leaked

Samsung has long been derided for its range of top-end smartphones with plastic body, but speculation has been rife for the past few months that the upcoming Galaxy S5 will have a metal body. And now, images of a metal frame of the smartphone have leaked online.

French website NoWhereElse, which is behind several accurate leaks in the past, has released the images of a metal frame, allegedly of the upcoming Samsung device.

According to the report, the metal frame was provided by a Samsung sub-contractor, which has been asked to manufacture it without specifying the model. Pros and Cons of using Linux

Just like any operating system, Linux has its pros and cons. You've heard the pros before: It's free, it's super customizable, and it helps you learn a lot more about how your computer works. There are also a ton of distros, which means you can find the perfect one for you. While some have gotten a lot easier to use in the past few years, none are foolproof. I used Linux as my primary OS on and off for a year or so, and here are some of the things I found.

Linux has some great apps, but is missing quite a few
Linux's app situation is interesting. If you're worried about not having a good image editing program, photo library, or music player, you might be surprised-Linux has some pretty great offerings (just check out our Linux App Directory if you don't believe me). Apps like digiKam compete with professional-level apps on other operating systems, and you have a lot of choices in some categories.

Do you need a smartphone with 1080p display?

If 1080p in a phone sounds like a lot, that's because it is. When the first iPhone with a "retina display" came out, it packed a 3.5" screen with a resolution of 960x640, giving it 326 pixelsper inch (or ppi). Notably, when Apple increased the physical size of the iPhone to 4", it also increased the resolution to 1136x640 which is still 326ppi. In most cases, 300ppi or so exceeds what the human eye is able to distinguish at a normal viewing distance (which is what Apple's "Retina" is supposed to refer to).

A 1080p phone, on the other hand, has an insane amount of pixels in comparison. In a 5" phone, a display of 1920x1080 has a whopping density of 440ppi. If you go down to, say a 4.7" phone like the HTC One, you reach 468ppi. That's a resolution that's about 50% higher than what most human eyes can readily distinguish under normal usage. You can probably see pixels if you squint really close, but is there any real benefit to going up this high?

High resolution displays use more battery power
It's impossible to add more pixels to a device without needing power to run them. Some types of panels like AMOLED only light up pixels as they're needed, which means you can conserve some power by using darker themes, but LCD displays will light them all up no matter what, which requires more juice. Not only to physically turn them on, but it also requires battery power to run the processor harder to account for the added complexity (which we'll come back to in a bit).

Motorola's Moto G: A perfect phone for India?

Motorola Mobility, the handset maker owned by Google, is still trying to find its niche in the smartphone market.
Sales of Motorola's high-end smartphone, the Moto X, have been slow. Now the company is targeting the low end of the market with a less expensive phone, but with a major limitation - the phone won't be released in China, the biggest market for low-end phones.
The lower-priced phone, Moto G, was announced by the company Wednesday. It costs at least $180 without a contract, and Motorola thinks it will appeal to people in placesBrazil, Chile and Peru, there are more than 500 million potential customers.

Much of its appeal for those customers would be Google's Internet services that are embedded in the phone. But in China, the government blocks some Google services, including Play, Google's official online store, making Motorola's new smartphone far less smart there.

Twitter was once named Friendstalker!

Twitter wasn't always Twitter! Twitter could have been named as 'Twitch', 'Smssy' and even bizarrely - 'Friendstalker', a book about the birth and growth of the microblogging site has revealed.
"There were several different ideas for the name of the service, including 'Twitch', Friendstalker' and 'Smssy'. In the end, of course, it was called 'Twitter' though the company did spend a short amount of time as a vowel-less 'Twttr', Nick Bilton wrote on his blog, quotinghis book 'Hatching Twitter'.
Bilton gained access to emails exchanged between Twitter's founders during the company's early days.
"During the reporting of Hatching Twitter I discovered a number of internal emails that showed the early logo explorations of the company," Bilton said.

iPad Mini with Retina Display available now, starting at $399: We go hands-on (updated)

The iPad Mini with Retina Display is now available, starting at $399 for the 16GB model. And, we have one here at CNET. How is it? Stay tuned for the full review, but here are my early impressions thus far.

The new iPad Mini does, indeed, have a much higher-resolution display than its predecessor, and a bumped-up A7 processor to boot, but if you pick up the new Mini it feels a lot like the old Mini. The differences become clear if you look closely, or play games, or read lots of small text. Whatever remaining limitations separated the larger iPad from the Mini have been removed. This is the Tiny Air, down to nearly every feature.

Sony Xperia Z1 vs LG G2 vs Galaxy Note 3

Fans of the Android platform are beginning to be treated to a whole host of high end smartphones from a variety of companies, and today we are looking at some of the leading players with the Sony Xperia Z1 vs. LG G2 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in some videos.

If you are not a fan of Samsung hardware on the Android platform there is still a lot of high quality smartphones to be had in various shapes and sizes, and below this page we have a couple of videos looking at some of the leading hardware that is available.

The first video is looking at the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 against the Sony Xperia Z1 and talks about the fake leather rear that the Samsung now uses which improves the feel of the device in the hand. The Sony on the other hand is built using aluminium and glass in a design that it has been using for a number of its flagship handsets this year.

Obviously the Note 3 is larger than the Xperia Z1 but it weighs less and the video continues by having a look around the two devices and the positioning of their various features and ports. We also get to see a number of the features the two handsets have in terms of software with the video lasting almost 11 minutes.

The second video we have for you is looking at the Sony Xperia Z1 but this time alongside the LG G2. The video starts by having a look at the design of the two smartphones, and despite the LG have a larger sized display the form factor of the device is smaller than the Sony.

Again we get to see the positions of the various features and buttons of the two smartphones, while both handsets using capacitive keys on the display. We get a rundown of the various specifications of the two devices before we get to see how some of the software features work. Check out the two videos for yourself and tell us what you think of the handsets.

Nexus 5 specs comparison with iPhone 5S, Galaxy Note 3, LG G2, Moto X, Xperia Z1, Galaxy S4, HTC One and others

The Nexus 5 is finally official, so it’s time to compare it to some of the existing flagship smartphones out there, including Android and non-Android devices.

The specs of the new Nexus have not been a secret for quite a while, and Google only confirmed yesterday what we already knew from the many leaks that preceded the announcement – much like with the Nexus 4 a year ago.

The Nexus 5 is largely based on the LG G2, but the device is not an exact replica of LG’s current flagship that’s simply running Google’s latest Android operating system. The handset is smaller in size and therefore packs a smaller battery, but that’s not the only difference when compared to the LG G2.

But the Nexus 5 marks an important jump from the Nexus 4, and we expect it to offer a significant overall performance improvement boost, especially considering the heavy optimization in KitKat – to see our Nexus 5 vs Nexus 4 comparison, check out this post. Not to mention that the Nexus 5 appears to be ready to stand the test of time in a much better fashion than the Nexus 4.

Here's why T-Mobile's Nexus 5 is $100 more than at Google Play

T-Mobile on Friday said it would offer the Nexus 5 starting November 14 with a down payment of $42 and 24 monthly payments of $17. Add that up, and you get $450, which happens to be $100 more than what Google is charging for the phone at its Google Play store.
The natural assumption, given this is a Google phone, is that T-Mobile is somehow generating a tidy profit on the highly coveted device. But that's not so, says T-Mobile. A representative confirmed to CNET that it pays full retail price when it purchases the phone from Google's manufacturing partner, LG.

Uh-oh, this 3D-printed metal handgun actually works

While the first known 3D-printed gun has been more-or-less dismissed because it can't reliably shoot, a new 3D-printed firearm has now been invented -- and it has no problems firing a round. In fact, it appears this handgun can fire dozens of rounds without a hitch.
What's the difference between the two? Instead of plastic, the new gun is made of metal.
The 3D-printed metal gun is made by the Texas-based 3D-printing services company Solid Concepts. The company used a laser sintering process to create the gun and powdered metals for the firearm's material. The weapon's design is based on a classic 1911 handgun and is made up of 33 different stainless steel and Inconel components, along with a carbon fiber filled nylon handgrip.

Why you should wait before buying an Xbox One or PS4

Both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will be here in a matter of days -- November 15 for the PS4 and a week later for the Xbox.
But that doesn't mean you should rush out and buy one.
Even if you're excited about the next wave of console games, signs are pointing in flashing red neon to wait. You could -- and probably should -- wait until next year to enjoy the fruits that these consoles will hopefully bring.
I'm not saying that I don't feel somewhat excited about the potential for new gaming consoles. I just know, based on what I've been seeing, that the future won't be arriving in 2013. The future path for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 is a long one, and one that still has more questions than answers.

Samsung Galaxy S5, Note 4 to have 16MP cameras

After not-so-impressive sales of Galaxy S4, Samsung seems all set to start 2014 with a bang. The company will launch the world's first smartphone with a bendable screen next year, but that's not all.

The top-tier Samsung handsets will get a camera upgrade next year and will feature a 16MP Isocell sensor. Thus, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 4 - the company's top two models - will get this high resolution camera at launch. This was revealed at Samsung's recent Analyst Day conference, where the company also revealed the roadmap for other technologies like displays, processors and memory.

Isocell technology ensures better light sensitivity on backside illuminated (BSI) sensors and delivers more natural colours as well as better low-light performance. The company has also revealed that its 16MP Isocell sensors will have 1.12micron pixels, lower than the ones in the new Apple iPhone 5S.

iPhone craze grips India, retailers await stocks

The rush for the latest iPhones, which were launched in India on November 1, has seen the costlier iPhone 5S model sold out across the country and retailers asking Apple for emergency replenishments, which are expected in the next two days, some of them said. To be sure, not too many phones may have been supplied by the company, with the trade estimating the number of 5S devices at 6,000 units.

Reliance Communications and Bharti Airtel, along with major retail chains, have sought additional stocks, but the Diwali weekend has delayed re-stocking efforts. Top multi-brand cellphone and electronic retail chains such as The MobileStore, PlanetM, UniverCell and Future Group say their iPhone 5S stocks are over but that they still have iPhone 5C phones.

BlackBerry may abandon smartphone business

The device that was so addictive that it was dubbed the "CrackBerry" might not have much of a future: Its new chairman and interim chief executive says he wants to emphasize software and services - not devices. That could mean the company might ultimately get out of the business of selling smartphones.

The possible change in strategy comes as Fairfax Financial, BlackBerry's largest shareholder with a 10% stake, said Monday it won't buy the struggling smartphone company and take it private. It said that instead Fairfax and other investors will inject $1 billion as part of a revised investment proposal.

Android’s Biggest Changes Aren’t Part of KitKat

My HTC One isn’t running Android 4.4 KitKat, but it feels pretty close. I just downloaded several apps that come standard with Google‘s Nexus 5. The apps were graciously posted by Droid Life, and when combined with a new “Google Home” launcher, the experience is a lota stock Android phone. I didn’t even have to root the phone or void my warranty. For now, this is somewhat of a hack, a way for enthusiasts to use Android as Google intended, even on non-Nexus devices. But it’s no accident that some of the biggest new features in Android 4.4 don’t require you to have Android 4.4 at all. In the future, it’s likely that Google will let users switch to the Nexus experience to practically any Android phone, with no rooting or sketchy third-party download sites required. Ron Amadeo of Ars Technica wrote a great story last month about how Google is taking back control of Android at the expense of the software’s open source roots. Slowly, Google is ceasing development on the open source versions of key apps, such as the software keyboard and the web browser, while building up proprietary apps such as Google Keyboard and Chrome.these apps are then licensed to phone makers as a package deal. If you’re Samsung, you can’t include Google’s app store without also including Google’s search app and web browser. This is how Google ensures that its services are available onmajor Android phones. The problem for Google is that it’s still easy for phone makers to circumvent those services. Samsung, for instance, has simply created its own versions of most Android core functions and hidden the Google stuff away by default.

Review: In Depth: HP Chromebook 11

The Chromebook concept – the idea of a stripped-down laptop that runs nothing but a web browser in the form of Google's Chrome OS – has up till now usually been about cheap, commodity computing.
It's been about manufacturers clustering around a low price point, and the compromises they have had to make to get a device out at that price point.
With the Chromebook 11 though, for the first time, a Chromebook can be both about affordability but also about delight.
Even if you're used to high end computers such as the MacBook Pro or Samsung ATIV Book 9, every time you pick up the Chromebook 11 you get a little jolt of pleasure.
It feels solid – light yet sturdy. The keyboard is genuinely very good. The IPS screen's colours are rich and vibrant. The styling feels fresh and simple and clean and friendly.
It feels, in short,a beautifully made, simple to use computer.
Plus the fact you've only paid GBP £229/USD $279/AUD $364 for it not only makes thatthe sweeter, but also makes you feelyou've got a special, secret, insiders' deal when everyone else is paying two, three, eight times as much to do pretty much the same things you'll be doing on your Chromebook.
