Start working by creating a new document (Ctrl+N) in Adobe Photoshop CS6 with the size 1920px by 1200px (RGB color mode) at a resolution of 72 pixels/inch.

Create a new layer, click on Add a layer style icon from bottom part of the Layers panel and select Gradient Overlay.

Micromax A200 smartphone's alleged specifications out

Micromax is reportedly working on a new budget smartphone. Allegedly called MicromaxA200, the upcoming Android smartphone will sport a 4.7-inch HD screen with Gorilla Glass 2 protection.

According to Twitter user MMXNewscaster, A200 will be powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. On camera front, the smartphone will have an 8MP camera at the back and a 5MP in the front.
Micromax A200 smartphone will come with 4GB internal storage and an 1800mAh battery. It will be just 7.9mm thick (for context, the Micromax Canvas Turbo is 8.6mm thick).
The Twitter user with the handle 'MMXNewscaster' has been behind several Micromax devices-related leaks in the past too.
The Twitter handle has also posted a render of the phone. Going by the render image, the alleged Micromax A200 looks similar to other phones in the Canvas series with rounded corners and three capacitive hardware buttons for navigation. The user has not revealed any details related to the version of Android that the phone would run.

High Speed Motion Trail Effect With Photoshop

In this Photo Effects tutorial, we’ll learn how to add a sense of speed to an object using an easy to create motion blur effect! This "speed trail" effect is very popular in sports photography since it’s a great way to add motion, direction and excitement to an image, creating the illusion that an athlete, for example, is blazing past the competition at super human speed. Of course, this effect works just as well with a photo of your kids running in the backyard, or people dancing at a party, or any image where the subject should appear to be moving. I’ll be working with Photoshop CS4 for this tutorial, but you can create this effect with any version of Photoshop.

Painterly Glow Effect With Smart Filters In Photoshop

In this Photoshop Effects tutorial, we’re going to learn how to give a photo a "painterly glow" effect using several instances of the Motion Blur filter. I call it a “painterly glow” because the final result looks sort of like a combination of a painting and glow effect. This is a very easy effect to create, but to help make it even easier, we’ll be using Smart Filters, first introduced in Photoshop CS3, which means you’ll need Photoshop CS3 or higher to follow along. It is possible to create this same photo effect in Photoshop CS2 or earlier without using Smart Filters, but as with all of our Photoshop tutorials, the main purpose here is not to memorize steps but to learn how Photoshop really works, and this effect gives us a great opportunity to get some hands-on experience with one of the best new features Adobe has added to Photoshop in years.

Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud) brings with it lots of exciting new features, including the brand new Camera Raw Filter that lets us apply any or all of Camera Raw’s powerful image editing abilities as a filter to any layer we want in our Photoshop document! What’s more, Camera Raw (and the Camera Raw Filter) in Photoshop CC includes new features of its own, like the amazing Radial Filter. In this tutorial, we’ll learn how the Radial Filter can be used to add highly customizable, creative vignette effects to your images!

Microsoft woos Indian companies to take on Android

Indian smartphone market is dominated by Android. But, in 2014 this may change. Microsoft is working with Indian phone makers like Lava to launch Windows Phone(WP) devices that will take on the mainstream and low-cost Android phones. The WP devices sold by the local companies are likely to be available in the market in the first half of 2014. They will be powered by Windows Phone 8.1, the next version of Windows Phone.

Vishal Sehgal, co-founder and director of Xolo, a separate entity created by Lava for premium phones, said Microsoft was talking to his company for Windows Phones. "We will come out with a WP device next year. The plan is to launch with Windows Phone 8.1," he said.
The Windows Phone 8.1 is likely to fix several important issues like lack of notification centre that have so far kept consumers away from Microsoft's mobile operating system (OS).
Globally, Microsoft has found very little support from hardware companies for Windows Phone. Only Nokia, which doesn't makeAndroid phones, is pushing the OS. Samsung, HTC, Huawei have mostly focused on Android devices instead of their Windows Phone devices.

Samsung Galaxy S5 may have diamond coating: Report

Samsung's next-generation flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, could sport a new exterior featuring a scratch-resistant coating with a diamond-like material.
Samsung is testing a new technology called the "diamond metal surface treatment" that involves diamond material being coated onto the metal case surface of the phone, as per a report by South Korean publication ET News.

The report points out the external design of Galaxy S5 is likely to be changed to a great extent. The process will make the phone's exterior less vulnerable to scratches and deformation.
It adds that Samsung could expose carbon material to high temperature and high pressure turning it into powder or liquid. It could then be coated on the surface of the metal case of the phone. The metal surface could be treated with nano materials or convert it into paint to coat over the surface.
However, it is worth pointing out that the company is expected to launch the Galaxy S5 in the first quarter of 2013. So it is unlikely it will be able to adopt this technology at a mass level so soon.
Another report by Digitimes cites "Taiwan-based chassis makers" to report that Samsung may or may not adopt a metal design for the Galaxy S5 as there's no sign of mass production, and that the South Korean electronics giant is still introspecting on the matter.

After iPad Air, Apple to launch iPad Pro: Reports

2014 seems to be the year thatApple will adopt big screens. While reports of bigger iPhones have been doing the rounds since early this year, latest reports say the iPad too is set to get bigger.

And Apple won't be done with just one model.
According to a report by International Business Times Australia, the Cupertino-based company is working on a 12.9-inch iPad with high-resolution display. This model is said to combine the capabilities of the Macbook Air and Macbook Pro in a keyboard-less format.

Korea Times has also reported that Apple is working with one of its first-tier display suppliers to develop a 12.9-inch Retina display. This panel is being currently manufactured in Korea and features picture quality similar to that of UHD (ultra high definition) displays.
The upcoming model, currently being termed iPad Pro, will come with both 2K and 4K displays. While the former is expected to hit the market in April next year, the latter is slated to launch in October.

Review: Google Nexus 7 rival Xolo Play Tegra Note

Nvidia showcased its reference design tablet, the Tegra Note, in September and announced Indian device maker Xolo as one of its partners, making it responsible for selling the device in the Indian market. The tablet's headline features include the powerful Nvidia Tegra 4 chip and an intelligent stylus, in addition to some new capabilities that leverage the Tegra 4 chip.

The tablet was priced at $199 (Rs 12,336 approximately at today's exchange rate) in the US, and appeared to be a compelling buy. Of course, we didn't expect it to sell in India at the same price and at Rs 17,999, a price that pitchforks it in the league of Google's new Nexus 7 tablet and Asus's Fonepad 7.
We try to find out if the Xolo Play Tegra Note - without 3G and calling support - offers more bang for your buck than the competing devices in our review.

The New And Improved Image Size Dialog Box In Photoshop CC

In this series of tutorials, we’ll learn how to resize images in Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud). We’ll start here with a quick overview of Photoshop CC’s newly redesigned Image Size dialog box, a welcome improvement over previous versions. Then, in the next tutorials, we’ll learn how to both resize and resample images, as well as the important difference between the two. We’ll also look at Photoshop CC’s image interpolation options, including a brand new one designed to keep our images looking crisp and sharp when we enlarge them, something previous versions of Photoshop have really struggled with.
Again, this tutorial, as well as the others in this series, are for Photoshop CC which requires a subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud. If you’re using Photoshop CS6 or earlier, you’ll want to read our original How To Resize Images In Photoshop tutorial, as well as the other image resizing tutorials found in our Digital Photo Essentials section.

Photoshop CS6 Blur Gallery – Iris Blur

In this tutorial, we’ll learn all about Iris Blur, the second of three new blur filters found in the Blur Gallery in Photoshop CS6. In the previous tutorial, we learned how to use Field Blur, which gives us the amazing ability to control the amount of blurring in different areas of an image without the need for layer masks (technically, these new blur filters in CS6 do use layer masks, but Photoshop creates them for us behind the scenes so we don’t need to worry about them). As we’ll see in this tutorial, Iris Blur gives us everything that Field Blur has to offer, and then takes things further by giving us even more ways to control exactly how and where the blurring effect is applied.
This tutorial builds on what we learned in the Field Blur tutorial, so if you haven’t already, I’d recommend reading it first before moving on.

Reshape Images With Content-Aware Scale In Photoshop

In this Photo Retouch tutorial, we’ll learn how the Content-Aware Scale feature, first introduced in Photoshop CS4, can help us transform and reshape images from one aspect ratio to another without distorting, or "squishing", our main subject and other important details in the image. The usual way to change a photo’s aspect ratio is to simply crop it using the Crop Tool, but that often means throwing away parts of the image we wanted to keep. With Content-Aware Scale, there’s no need to crop anything away because Photoshop can move people and objects closer together (or further apart) almost like magic so everything fits within the new shape!
How does it work? With the Content-Aware Scale command selected, Photoshop will examine your photo and try to figure out, often with amazing accuracy, which areas are important (like your main subject) and which are not, and will do its best to protect the important areas as you’re reshaping the image. Content-Aware Scale can be a powerful and time-saving feature when it works, but (there’s always a "but") the problem is that it doesn’t always work. In fact, it really depends on the image you’re using. In general, Content-Aware Scale works best with photos that contain large areas of low image detail (blue skies, open fields, calm waters, and so on). The reason is that for Photoshop to be able to move two areas of an image closer together, it needs to squish and compress the area between them. If the area between them contains too much image detail of its own, things can quickly turn into a jumbled mess. If, on the other hand, the area between them contains low amounts of detail, like a sky or open field, then it’s easier for Photoshop to push those pixels together with fewer noticeable problems, giving you much better results.

Resizing Images For Email And The Web With Photoshop CC

In the first tutorial in this series on resizing images in Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud), we learned about the new features and improvements in the redesigned Image Size dialog box. We then looked at the basics of how to resize images where we learned how to change the print size of a photo. In this third tutorial, we’ll look specifically at one of the most common uses for Photoshop these days – how to resize an image so it’s suitable for sending off in an email or uploading to a website. To get the most from this tutorial, I recommend first reading through the previous two in this series, as well as our related article on The 72 PPI Web Resolution Myth which explains, in more detail than I’ll get into here, why we don’t need to worry about the Resolution value in the Image Size dialog box when resizing images for the web or any type of screen output.

Photoshop Weather Effects – Snow

If you’re using an earlier version of Photoshop, don’t worry, we didn’t leave you out in the cold. Simply follow along with our original Photoshop Snow Effect tutorial!
In previous tutorials, we learned how to create a starry night sky effect and also how to make it rain in an image, and you may be thinking, “That’s great, but what does that have to do with creating snow?”. Well, if you followed along with those other tutorials, you may have noticed that the same basic technique for adding stars in the sky was also used to create the rain effect. And as you work through this tutorial, you’ll spot the same technique being used again to create the snow! One basic technique, three completely different possibilities!

Essential Photoshop Color Settings For Photographers

Adobe Photoshop is the world’s most powerful (and popular) image editor, trusted by both amateur and professional photographers everywhere to help their photos look their very best. With that in mind, it may surprise you to learn that Photoshop’s default color settings – that is, the settings that determine the range of colors and tonal values we have available to us when editing and retouching our images – are actually preventing our photos from looking the way they should, both when viewed on screen and when printed. In this tutorial, we’ll learn why the default color settings are not the best choice and which settings will give us better results.
Now, I could talk all day long about color theory and wish I still had more time, but I also know I’d risk putting a lot of good people to sleep if I did that. So in this tutorial, we’ll keep the technical stuff to a minimum and focus on what the correct settings in Photoshop’s Color Settings dialog box should be so you can start editing and retouching your images with your newly-expanded range of color possibilities. If you are interested in learning more about these color settings, I’ll be covering them in more detail in other tutorials.

Removing Acne, Skin Blemishes With The Spot Healing Brush In Photoshop

In this Photo Retouching tutorial, we’ll look at one of the most amazing and time saving photo retouching tools available, the Spot Healing Brush, the first of three image "healing" tools in Photoshop. The Spot Healing Brush was first introduced in Photoshop CS2 and, like the other two healing tools (the standard Healing Brush and the Patch Tool), it’s essentially a texture replacement tool, meaning that it tries to create a seamless repair by replacing damaged or unwanted texture from one area in an image with good texture from another area, without changing the problem area’s original color or brightness values. What makes the Spot Healing Brush so amazing and fast is that it does this with almost no effort from us!

Sync Photoshop’s Color Settings With All Creative Suite Apps

In a previous tutorial, we learned how to make a few simple but important changes to the default color settings in Photoshop to make sure we have the largest possible range of colors and tonal values available to us when editing and retouching our images. We also learned how to save our changes as a custom preset that we can easily switch to when needed.
That’s great if the only program we use is Photoshop itself. But what if, like many people, you purchased Photoshop as part of a larger Creative Suite package, or a Creative Cloud subscription, that also includes Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and other applications? In that case, you’ll want to make sure they’re all using the same color settings you set up in Photoshop so you can maintain accurate colors as you move your images from one application to another. Fortunately, as we’ll learn in this tutorial, there’s no need to open each app separately to change its settings because Adobe made it easy to synchronize Photoshop’s color settings with the entire Creative Suite or Creative Cloud. The only catch is that you won’t find the option to do so anywhere in Photoshop. Instead, we synchronize our color settings using Adobe Bridge.

Resizing Images To Match Photo Frame Sizes With Photoshop CS6

In this tutorial, we’ll look at one of the most common issues that photographers and Photoshop users run into when resizing images for print – how to resize them to fit within a certain size picture frame when the aspect ratio of the photo and the frame are different.
Most photos captured with a digital camera today can easily be resized to print as a 4"x6" or 8"x12", perfect for displaying in, well, 4"x6" or 8"x12" frames. But obviously (and thankfully) not all frames are 4"x6" or 8"x12". What if you want to display your image as a 5"x7", an 8"x10", 11"x14" and so on? How do you resize the image to print in these different aspect ratios without squishing, stretching or in any way distorting the look of the original? You may have already discovered that there’s no way to do that in Photoshop’s Image Size dialog box. As we’ll learn in this tutorial, what we actually need is a two-step process involving both the Image Size command and Photoshop’s Crop Tool. Yet even though there’s a bit more to it, reshaping an image for a specific frame size is easy. When you’re done with this tutorial, you’ll be able to print your photos for display in any size frames you choose!

How to run a sustainable business on top of a mobile application

One of my favorite guilty pleasures is Susan Miller, a popular New York astrologer who has a cult following online. I read her horoscopes religiously and enjoy following her on Twitter for the fun mix of quirky updates and planetary advice she dispenses.

But in mid-November, I noticed a striking shift in the tone of her posts. Miller had recently refreshed her iPhone app and added a subscription priced from 99 cents a day to $50 for the year. Some of her readers were furious, and Miller was, by turns, apologetic and defensive.

"You got a great deal for a long time," she told one person on Twitter. "All $50 does not go all to me. So sorry to see you go," she tweeted at another.

When we met a few weeks later at her haunt of choice, the Carlyle hotel on Manhattan's Upper East Side, she told me that she'd had no choice but to raise her price. Her old application, which was priced at a few dollars to download and gave users free access to all of her daily and monthly horoscopes, wasn't bringing in enough money to sustain her business. The newly released version of her app is built around a freemium model, meaning it is free to download and offers abridged versions of her horoscopes. Users have to pay extra to read the full versions.

How Doom changed the video game industry

At the stroke of midnight on December 10, 20 years ago, a file was uploaded to an FTP site on the University of Washington's network.
It sparked a revolution and changed the face of the video game industry, which now rakes in $66 billion each year (to put that in perspective, Hollywood is expected to make $11 billion in 2013).
The file, titled 'doom1_0.zip', was a mere 2MB in size, and was capable of fitting onto a couple of floppy disks (remember those?), and the game, of course, was Doom.

It was immediately picked up by students and gamers who put copies on other locations of the fledgeling internet. It made its way into the computers of people around the world, and into best-of lists and magazine articles.
It probably pioneered the debate about violent videogames, given that the Columbine school shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were avid Doom fans.

Internet of Things to grow 30-times by 2020: Gartner

The Internet of Things (IoT) will grow to 26 billion units by 2020, representing an almost 30-fold increase from 0.9 billion in 2009, as per IT research and advisory firm Gartner.

The Internet of Things is the network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment.
The IoT product and service supplier, which excludes PCs, tablets and smartphones will generate incremental revenue exceeding $300 billion, mostly in services, in 2020. It will result in $1.9 trillion in global economic value-add through sales into diverse end markets.

"The growth in IoT will far exceed that of other connected devices. By 2020, the number of smartphones tablets and PCs in use will reach about 7.3 billion units," said Peter Middleton, research director at Gartner.
"In contrast, the IoT will have expanded at a much faster rate, resulting in a population of about 26 billion units at that time," he added.

Buyhatke.com, one portal for all e-commerce websites

Two IIT Kharagpur students, Gaurav Dahake and Prashant Singh, in the final term of their course last year were checking out a few e-commerce sites to buy an iPod for their friend's birthday. But it wasn't a comfortable experience. The more they surfed the more they were at a loss.

Different sites showed different prices, discounts and delivery time. There was no way of easily coming to a decision. Finally, they ordered one, only to learn later that the product would take five days to arrive, well after the birthday. They also realized that when they placed the order, they were not aware of another site which offered the product Rs 300 less. The experience set the two thinking on the need turn online shopping into a hassle-free experience.

Explains Dahake, "It's not easy to find out the best deal while shopping online. We felt every buyer should be able to know all the e-commerce sites that offered the product and the prices they offered."

A website, Buyhatke.com, was their solution. With a designer, Srikanth Sethumadhavan from their campus, and a monthly sum of Rs 8,000 the IIT gave each of them in their final year, the work on Buyhatke.com began. "People are not only price sensitive, they also don't have the time to hop back and forth many sites. We cover all products from baby care to books to electronic goods. There are 47 e-commerce sites, including all the major ones, on board. When you search for a product, you get to know every possible site that offers it," says Dahake.
"In January this year, the site was getting about 5,000 visitors every month. That number has gone up to a million visitors monthly," he says. The revenues come from affiliate sites, advertisements and exclusive home page listing for retailers. Dahake says the sites are selected after due diligence and they are constantly reviewed based on performance and consumer feedback. The team has also created a Chrome extension that helps buyers get the best price by comparing across portals. It also set price alerts.

After Amazon, Flipkart too offers same-day delivery

Following in the footsteps of its rival Amazon, Indian e-commerce website Flipkart has also launched single day guaranteed delivery, named 'In-a-day Guarantee.' The service will allow consumers in select cities to get goods ordered from Flipkart delivered the next day.

'In-a-day Guarantee' is currently available in seven cities, namely Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Noida and Pune. But it requires consumers to place orders by 6pm. Flipkart also levies an additional cost of Rs 90 per item for delivery under the service. Users can opt to avail the service at the time of making payments (check out). Orders placed after 6pm will be delivered the day after, as per the company.

Speaking about the launch, Ravi Vora, Flipkart's senior vice-president marketing, said, "We have had a lot of customers requesting urgent deliveries, for reasons ranging from occasion-led gifts to pre-travel shopping. But given the large volumes that we handle, it wasn't feasible to address them on a case-to-case basis. We have now built the capability into our supply-chain and can now offer it as a guaranteed feature. This value-added service is available to consumers who need it - making online shopping a viable option even for last-minute purchases. We hope this will further accelerate the adoption of e-commerce in the country."

Facebook may soon launch 'Sympathize' button

Facebook's 'Like' button has been one of its biggest successes, but it is not rare to find posts which one may not actually like. In such cases users often write 'dislike' in comments just to express their unhappiness about the topic of the post. While the 'Dislike' button may still be away, users may get to see a 'Sympathize' button in their news feed.
According to a Huffington Post report, Facebookis pondering on introducing a 'Sympathize button'. The button created by an employee during Facebook hackathon held "a little while back" reportedly became an instant hit.
This button would appear when users post a gloomy update (for example Sad or Depressed from Facebook's list of feelings) in place of 'Like'.
Facebook engineer, Dan Muriello, told Huffington Post that though the idea of a 'Sympathize' button was warmly welcomed by others at the company, the button is still some time away from becoming a reality.
Muriello said, "It would be, 'five people sympathize with this,' instead of 'five people 'Like' this.' Which of course a lot of people were -- and still are -- very excited about. But we made a decision that it was not exactly the right time to launch that product. Yet."

Is your child getting low grades? Blame the cellphone

Frequent cellphone use may lead to anxiety, lower grades and reduced happiness in students, a new study has found.

Researchers found that cellphone use was negatively related to Grade Point Average (GPA) and positively related to anxiety.
As cellphone use continues to increase, it is worth considering whether use of the device is related to measurable outcomes important for student success, such as academic performance, anxiety and happiness, researchers said.

Mobile radiation causes no health risk: WHO

Mobile towers and mobile phone radiations have no health risks and do not cause cancer, a World Health Organisation (WHO) expert said.
"WHO studies have already proven that mobile phones do not affect human health. Cancer or brain tumour apart, it doesn't cause even headaches or sleep disorder," said radiation expert Michael Repacholi, the first co-ordinator of WHO's radiation and environmental health unit.
Talking at the launch of the book "Mobile Phones and Public Health - Myth and Reality" here, Repacholi added: "A person absorbs five times more radio frequency (RF) from FM radio or television than the base station tower. Mobile tower radiation is lower compared to RF emissions from radio FM or television."

First look: Moto G smartphone

You're not getting the best or the latest technology with Motorola's $179 Moto Gsmartphone. What you do get is a great price for something close.

Motorola bills the Moto G as the phone for the rest of us -- the ones who can't afford $500-700 for a high-end smartphone. That's a big deal overseas, where carriers don't subsidize phones with two-year service contracts the way they do in the United States. But even in the US, more people are moving to contract-free plans and ones that offer frequent upgrades, meaning the full retail price is what's going to matter.

Its secret weapon? The postman. Amazon already sends packages by India Post but now it wants to use the channel to collect payments from recipients as well, using the cash-on-delivery model. Amazon has started a pilot with India Post to test this system, which could help it reach deep into India's hinterland, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Huawei reportedly decides to abandon the US market

It's no secret that Chinese telecom gear maker Huawei and the US government aren't exactly best friends -- for the past couple of years, the US has accused Huawei of cyberespionage on behalf of the Chinese military.
It appears this spat may now have escalated into a full-fledged falling-out.

How to upgrade or replace your PS4's hard drive

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are both equipped with a 2.5-inch 500GB hard drive that spins at 5,400 revolutions per minute. Only the PlayStation 4's hard drive, however, can be replaced or upgraded.
Sony previously allowed gamers to upgrade their hard drives in the PlayStation 3, and with some games taking up more than 50GB of space, we are thankful the company kept the same philosophy with the PlayStation 4.
The process is relatively simple and should only take you a couple of minutes to complete.

How to manually edit defaults plist files in Mavericks

The main preferences and settings-storage system in OS X is the "defaults," which saves values in binary- or ascii-encoded XML property lists. These are commonly seen in the user account's "Preferences" folder, but they exist in other locations and for other purposes in the OS.
The defaults for programs and system services are usually modified from within the program or OS settings panel, but common practice is to modify them by hand and then reload the relevant service or program to invoke the change. This can be done for standard settings, but is also useful for enabling hidden settings that Apple has implemented but provides no official setting for, such as moving the Dock to the corner of the display edge instead of being centered.
This type of setting can be invoked simply by running the relevant defaults command in Terminal to write it, followed by reloading the running program (like with the Dock). However, many defaults settings can be deeply nested structures that are too complex to create and manage using the standard defaults command.

How to set up an external hard drive for use with OS X

When you first attach a new external hard drive to your Mac, it should mount and be ready to use; however, before relying on it, consider first taking a couple of precautionary steps to ensure that the drive continues to work as expected.
One of the first things to take into account is that the drive is likely preformatted to FAT32 instead of a more OS-specific format. Since FAT32 is readable and writable on both Windows and OS X systems, this is quickest way for a drive to work on each platform; however, it does have some limitations, including the lack of journaling support that would help prevent data corruption, and lack of support for filesystem permissions. In addition, FAT32 drives usually come with the Master Boot Record partition scheme, which does not work with Apple's CoreStorage routines, and therefore will not allow OS-supported encryption of the drive (among other customizations).
