How to Fix a Scratched CD or DVD with Toothpaste

How to Repair a CD With Toothpaste

When CDs were released we were told about their "indestructibility". But soon after some of us have been brutal with our new CDs they were seen as not the immortals they were believed to be. Commercial CD repair kits are expensive, but there is one key thing to repair CDs that isn't. What's that? Toothpaste.

1.Take out your CD/DVD. Examine the back. There may be a fair amount of scratches on the back. Some can be fatal - some aren't. Small ones are nothing serious, but can grind down the quality. If some of it has chipped away, then the CD/DVD can't be saved.

2.Wash the CD carefully in mild soapy water to remove any small particles that might scratch the CD.

3.Put the CD/DVD on a clean washcloth. DO NOT put it on a ripped or dirty rag.

4.Get a tube of toothpaste. Squirt a circle just on the outside of the inner circle. Use your index finger to spread the toothpaste.

5.Lay the CD/DVD on a flat surface, and using your clean fingers gently rub the toothpaste in small circular motions just as you would if polishing your car.
