67% of all emails in August were unsolicited: Kaspersky

In August, unsolicited emails made up 67.6% of all global email traffic, according toKaspersky Lab figures, which is 3.6% points lower than in July.

If that change is linked to the summer vacation season, then it was the most innocuous spammers that left town: the rate of phishingmessages rose more than 10 times compared to July, while the volume of spam messages containing malicious attachments rose 2.5 times, accounting for 5.6% of all email traffic.

The vacation season may have been winding down, but cybercriminals kept up a continuous bombardment of fake messages announcing non-existent airline and hotel reservations, with the spammers using some of the biggest names in these industries.

The fact that such messages often look genuine can relax the recipient's vigilance. They usually prompt the user to open a malicious attachment or follow a link that initiates a file download to the hard drive. In either case, the victim computer is infected with the Tepfer Trojan that steals user credentials.

Asian apps WeChat, Line move to conquer Europe

Move aside Facebook and Skype. Asian social networks, already hugely popular on their continent, have set their sights on Europe where they could prove stiff competition for their US rivals.
China's WeChat and Japan's Line, which let users make free calls, send instant messages and post funny short videos and photos, take attributes from Facebook, Skype and messaging application WhatsApp and roll them all together.
This week, Line executives travelled to France and Italy for a public relations offensive aimed at raising awareness of the mobile app, which already counts some 230 million users around the world including 47 million in Japan alone.

The social network has already taken root in other parts of Europe. In Spain, for instance, Line has forged heavyweight partnerships with football clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, brands such as Coca-Cola or tennis star Rafael Nadal.

FC Barcelona, for instance, has a home page on the app where it posts photos that has already drawn more than 8.2 million friends.

HTC One Max photos leaked online

Phablets are in nowadays and it seems that HTC does not want to be left behind in this booming segment. Images of HTC's much-talked about One Max phablet have leaked online again. The leaked images of the device come from the database of Tenaa, China's independent official communications agency.

There have been speculations that the phablet would release in China first and with these images, it is likely that the device hits the world's biggest mobile market ahead of the international market. The Chinese version of the device is said to have a removable back and supports microSD card, both features are reported to be missing from the international version.

Several HTC One Max images have leaked in the past as well. The new images suggest that the company would continue with the design language it introduced with HTC One in this handset as well. The phone will have BoomSound speakers above and below the display and a fingerprint scanner on the back.

Earlier leaks suggest that the device would be bigger in size than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, with a display of 5.9-inch.

India shines in Facebook’s global friendships map

Facebook's recently released global friendships map shows India among the 'densest use' countries where the social networking site is accessed the most to form friendships across the world.
The new map shows Facebook's global reachnow impacting India, Africa and South America.
The original version of the map, which was released three years ago, shows most of the world illuminated by transcontinental friendships, with oceans dominated by blue arcs of light, metro.co.uk reports.
According to the report, China is shown dark, because of the site being banned in the country, while countries like Russia, where homegrown networks are favoured, are also less bright.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg set the map as his cover photo and captioned it as the 'map of all the friendships formed on Facebook across the world'.
The report said that visualisation was the brainchild of former intern Paul Butler, who revealed that is not just a pretty picture, it's a reaffirmation of the impact Facebook has in connecting people, even across oceans and borders.

Samsung copies Apple, announces gold Galaxy S4

It seems after witnessing the craze for the recently launched gold editions of the iPhone 5S, Samsung has also decided to tread the golden path. The South Korean smartphone giant has announced that it is bringing in two gold colour models of its flagship smartphone Galaxy S4. Twitter accounts of the Samsung Arabia and Samsung Gulf tweeted pictures of the two models, one brown gold in colour and the other pink gold. Official Twitter accounts posting these photos suggests that Samsung would be releasing these models in the Middle East in the first phase, and then perhaps roll them out to other markets, depending on their initial response. Samsung's latest move comes barely a week after media reports came in of the gold colour iPhones being a hot favourite in the market with most of the supplies being sold out in China, Hong Kong, US and other major markets. As per reports, a scarcity of gold iPhones saw people selling the variant for over $1,000 on eBay, much higher than the $649 base retail price.

Microsoft unveils Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 tablets

Microsoft unveiled two new versions of its Surface tablet, aiming to ramp up its efforts in mobile computing after a failed launch a year ago.
The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 have "significant updates, including improvements to processing power and battery life," Microsoft said in a statement as it unveiled the devices at a New York event.
The changes represent "the revamp we need," said Microsoft vice president Panos Panay as he showed the new tablets to news media.
The launch is Microsoft's second stab at the growing tablet market after the Surface released last year failed to make a dent in a market dominated by Apple's iPad and various devices using the Google Android operating system.

Panos said the new device includes Microsoft's revamped Windows 8.1 system, the popular Outlook program and a whopping 100,000 applications, up from the 10,000 in the previous version.

Review: iOS 7 is radically different

iOS 7 is the free software update for iPhones (iPhone 4 and later), iPads (iPad 2 and later) and iPod Touches (fifth generation). It's a radical, huge redesign. The look is sparse, white — almost plain in spots. No more fake leather, fake woodgrain, fake green felt, fake yellow note paper. It's all blue Helvetica Neue against white.
The complete absence of graphic embellishments makes it especially utilitarian — in both senses of the word. That's good, because whatever button or function you need is easier to find; it's bad, because, well, it can look a little boring.
Then again, the new look is primarily visible at the Home screen, where a jarringly different colour palette greets you on the Apple app icons, and on the options screen. The rest of the time, you'll be using your regular apps, many of which will look no different than before.
You no longer have to burrow into infinitely nested Settings screens to adjust your control panels. Now you can just speak what you want, using Siri: "Open Wi-Fi settings," for example , or "Open brightness settings."
Or, when speaking to your phone isn't socially appropriate, you can swipe upward from the bottom of the screen to open the Control Center: a compact, visual palette of controls for the settings and functions you're most likely to need: brightness, volume, Bluetooth, WiFi, Airplane Mode, Play/Pause Music , calculator, camera, and — my favourite — Flashlight. This panel slides in over whatever app you're using, so you don't lose your place.
This idea — swiping in from the margins of the phone — also plays out in the new Back gesture. The iPhone doesn't have a Back button, as Android phones do. But now you can swipe in from the left margin of the phone to go back one screen.
The iPhone has never had a system-wide Search button, either, but here again, Apple has made some strides. The Search screen is no longer off to the left of the Home screens; now it's above them — all of them. You can now open Spotlight search by dragging downward from any Home screen.
To turn on Private Browsing in Safari , for example, you used to have to open the Settings app, burrow around, find the on-off switch, then return to the browser. Now the Private button is right in Safari, where it belongs.

Campus hiring: BPOs head to medical, law colleges

Business process outsourcing firms are beginning to hire directly from colleges and universities, a practice pioneered and perfected by country's information technology services industry, which is now slowing down such campus recruitment.

The more organised hiring is being prompted by the changing nature of work, which is rising in complexity and value, calling for more regular supply of talent with specific skills. However, unlike IT services companies which hired mostly from engineering colleges, BPOs are casting their net wider to include medical, commerce and law graduates.

"We are identifying specific campuses that can give us dedicated supply of qualified people we need," said Keshav R Murugesh, group chief executive officer at WNS Global Services, which employs 25,000 people and has revenues of about $500 million (Rs 3,050 crore).

"The potential right now is immense and it is only growing." "Companies are looking to offer more domain-specific , higher value service such as data analytics or riskmodelling ," said Sangeetha Gupta, senior vice-president of Nasscom, about the transformation underway in the sector.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer‘s biggest regret

Microsoft chief executive  Steve Ballmer has made an impassioned plea to investors to support his vision of the world's largest software company as a unified devices and services powerhouse in his swan song before Wall Street.

Ballmer, who in August said he planned to step down within 12 months, told investors and analysts in an annual meeting that Microsofthad a bright future, despite missteps under his 13-year tenure.

"We have the tools. There's economic upside here. In the long run, we are almost uniquely poised to seize the opportunity," he said, in a typically high-volume presentation. "Today I'm speaking as an investor. You all own Microsoft stock, cheer for it, for God's sake."

Ballmer, who took over from co-founder Bill Gates as CEO in 2000, did acknowledge that under his leadership the company was too focused on Windows to realize that Apple's iPhone was revolutionizing computing.

Camera review: iPhone 5S vs Lumia 1020 vs Galaxy S4 zoom

I used to cringe when I'd see people capturing precious memories with their smartphones. Although most smartphones have megapixel counts similar to what stand-alone cameras offer, they have been inferior in lens quality and manual controls. Images have never been as good... until now.

Over the past two months, I've shot more than 3,000 test photos in four states using nine camera phones, a point-and-shoot camera and a high-end, single-lens reflex camera (also known as an SLR). None of the smartphone cameras are good enough to replace a $1,000-plus SLR, but I'm surprised how well some of the phones did, particularly in low-light settings that challenge even the best cameras.

Three phones stand out: Nokia's Lumia 1020, Samsung's Galaxy S4 Zoom and Apple's new iPhone 5S.

The Lumia 1020 squeezes a lot of camera innovations into a small device. It can take photos as large as 38MP, which means you can crop the image to a quarter its size and still have enough detail for large poster-size prints. With smaller files, you're limited to smaller prints when you crop.

iphone 5c features and full specification review

Color yet another reason to love iPhone
Every feature we add to iPhone must answer yes to one question: Will it make the experience better? So the colors of iPhone 5c received the same intense consideration we apply to everything we make. We even designed the Home screen and wallpaper colors to complement the exterior. As a result, using iPhone is that much more engaging and delightful.

Design. Brilliant color. And construction
With an all-new design, this is iPhone as you’ve never seen it — or held it. iPhone 5c is beautifully, unapologetically plastic, the better to bring its five decidedly uncommon colors to life. Beneath the smooth surface of the seamless outer shell, a steel-reinforced frame provides structural integrity. So iPhone 5c feels reassuringly solid in your hand.

Cases. One Phone. Multiple Personalities
Oh, how quickly things change. Add one of the six Apple‑designed cases to your iPhone 5c and it instantly goes from colorfully cool to impossible to ignore. The case design allows the color underneath to show through, creating 30 fun possibilities. So the iPhone 5c Case does more than just protect your phone — it helps it stand out. And it helps you make it yours.

Daimler aims to launch self-driving car by 2020

Germany's Daimler AG   plans to start selling a self-driving car by 2020 as part of its campaign to regain the top spot among premium carmakers, its development chief said.

Carmakers and suppliers across the world are working on ways to make driving safer and more comfortable through automation, and the race is on to bring the technology to the mass market.

"We want to be the first to launch autonomous functions in production vehicles. You can be sure: we will accomplish that in this decade," Daimler head of development Thomas Weber said.
Daimler, battling to regain the top stop in the luxury car market from German rival BMW, is focusing on so-called highly automated driving, in which cars master situations such as cruising the motorway or manoeuvring through traffic jams while the driver relaxes.

The car would recognise difficult situations such as dealing with traffic lights or urban driving among pedestrians and cyclists, and hand control back to the human behind the wheel.

Apple testing 6-inch iPhones: WSJ

While Samsung is in the news for its Galaxy Note III, Apple is also reportedly working on an iPhone phablet. The Wall Street Journal citing sources has reported that the company is testing iPhones of various sizes, with screen sizes ranging from 4.8-inch to 6-inch.

The WSJ report says that Apple has shown keen interest in the iPhone prototype having 4.8-inch screen. Previous reports have suggested that Apple is testing a model called iPhone Math that has a 4.8-inch display.

However, the iPhone models expected to be launched at the company's forthcoming September 10 event are not expected to have such big screens. It is expected that the two models - namely iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C - will have 4-inch displays, same as the iPhone 5 that was launched last year.
Several companies are currently working on 6-inch phones, including HTC and Nokia. Samsung already has phones with screens measuring 5.7-inch, 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch in its portfolio. Sony has the biggest smartphone in the world in its line-up, the Xperia Z Ultra with a 6.4-inch screen. Other major manufacturers like ZTE and Huawei also have models with screen size around 6-inch in their line-up.
The WSJ report says, "It is unclear whether Apple will ultimately choose to follow a multi-size, multi-device strategy beyond shipping a new lower-cost model for the first time later this month. The company often tests different devices and configurations before choosing a course."

China Telecom ‘confirms’ iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C

While the world speculates about the launch of iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, a Chinese telecom giant has practically confirmed the two Apple smartphones.

China Telecom, one of the three biggest telecom companies in the country, recently put up a pre-order page for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C on its official website. It also posted information about the two smartphones on its Sina Weibo account. However, the web page and the posts were later taken down by the company.

Apple has sent out invites for an exclusive event for China on September 11, just a day after it is expected to launch its new smartphones globally. This is the first time that the company is hosting an event exclusively for any country.
The China Telecom web page shed light on some features of the iPhone 5S flagship smartphone. It said that the phone has a larger screen, touch on the display panel, A7 processor, iOS 7 operating system, sapphire Home key, a gold version, supports LTE-A technology, wireless charging, larger battery capacity, support slow motion video capture and dual flash. Most of these features are in line with previously leaked specifications, though the larger screen has been mentioned for the first time for the iPhone 5S.

Google counters Microsoft-Nokia with a KitKat

Competition for Microsoft-Nokia just got hotter. Or so believe observers of IT and telecom industries.

A day after the $7.2 billion Microsoft-Nokia deal, Google surprised users worldwide with its announcement of KitKat, a new Android 4.4 operating system (OS) named after a chocolate brand of Nestle with which the Internet giant has forged a co-branding tie-up on Wednesday.

It could well be that KitKat the OS is a celebration of either Android crossing the 1 billion activation mark worlwide or Google’s 15th birthday.

But given that KitKat the OS came close on the heels of the Google Nexus 4 handset, experts feel it may have come a skosh prematurely, suggesting Google may be sensing stiff competition from Microsoft-Nokia, said analyst Mohammed Chowdhury of PwC. “With KitKat (the OS), Google is sending out a signal to Microsoft that there will always be a challenge near at hand in the highly competitive market.”

Hands-on with Sony's Xperia Z1: 'Sony is throwing everything at this phone'

For months now, there’s been a buzz in the world of technology that Sony was about to release a mobile phone that would be a giant leap forward compared to its rivals and its own previous phones. “Sony is throwing everything at this phone,” those in the know would cryptically hint.

When the Sony Xperia Z arrived at the beginning of the year, many thought that was it. Or that the svelte, huge-screened Xperia Z Ultra was the one. But no. Today at IFA, the electronics trade show in Berlin, Sony Mobile announced the Xperia Z1.

This is the one they were talking about. Is it any good? After all, there are a number of impressive phones on the market to choose from. Initially I was unsure – does the world need another phone with a big five-inch display? I’ve spent some days with the first Z1 allowed outside Sony property to put it through its paces.

The software first: Sony’s take on Android is elegant and subtle with discreet icons and plenty of special elements like TrackID – Sony’s version of Shazam – and its entertainment download store.

Galaxy Gear: Samsung unveils smartwatch

Smartphones, with their big screens and accurate clocks, have been blamed for the failing sales of wristwatches. But tonight in Berlin, Samsung announced a gadget that, it hopes, will soon be decking those currently empty wrists - a smart watch.

Tonight, modern, appealing wearable tech took a step closer to reality when Samsung announced the Galaxy Gear. And the Korean manufacturer will hope it is paving the way for a whole new category of gadget with this invention.

Nobody puts on a show quite like Samsung. A hidden orchestra played highly effective background music, giant screens showed images of new products and, suddenly, black cloths fell away to double the screen size. JK Shin, Samsung's president and CEO, revealed this highly secret product in the most sideways of fashions: when talking about another phone, the screen showed an image of the smart watch as if by accident, proving it can put text message alerts and reminders on your wrist.

So far, the buzzphrase of wearable tech has been mostly limited to gadgets that are not on widespread sale, like the Google Glass headset that is turning out to be the most Marmitey of gizmos, inspiring strong reactions even from people who have never even seen one. Or the Apple iWatch which remains nothing more than rumour at present.

New version of Android sweetened by KitKat

Google has surprised the tech world by announcing that the next version of Android, its mobile operating system, will be named KitKat -- in honor of the candy bar developers munched on while they were creating it.
"We couldn't imagine a better name for our Android K release than the tasty chocolate that's been a favorite among the team since the early days of Android," said Marc Vanlerberghe, Google's marketing director for Android.
The name keeps with a Google tradition, established in 2009, of naming versioRead Morns of the industry-leading system after sweet treats. But it's the first time one of the nicknames has been a trademarked product and, as such, KitKat maker Nestle was needed to sign on.
The Swiss food and drink maker did -- and in a big way.
More than 50 million KitKat bars, specially branded with Google's green Android robot on their packaging, will be released, giving customers a chance to win prizes that include a Nexus 7 tablet and credits to the Google Play store. A small number of robot-shaped KitKats will also be shipped as surprises for customers.
The company also got in on the act with its KitKat website, which has been overhauled to look like the site of a tech company rolling out a sleek new piece of electronics. That includes an earnest promotional video that could easily be read as a swipe at Apple, Google's chief mobile rival.

He made his debut for Sussex at 18 years of age.
At the peak of his powers, Wisden, who went on to play 187 first-class cricket matches for Kent, Middlesex and Sussex, was known as 'The Little Wonder'.
He is widely considered to have been the best all-rounder of his day.

99.9% of new mobile malware targets Android: Kaspersky

Google's popular operating system Android is reportedly also the most prone to malware attacks as found by security firms who claim that the number of malware programmes attacking the OS have only risen this year.
Security firm Kaspersky Lab's analyst Christian Funk said that 99.9% of all new phone malware targets Android and one year ago the firm recorded 30,000 versions of malware targeting mobiles.
According to stuff.co.nz, the malware attacks Android due to its wide availability making it a big target as its market share has risen about 80% in recent times.
Funk said that since the system is open, anyone can download the necessary documentation and write software which can be used as a camouflage for the viruses, targeting people looking for popular apps, thereby making them download apps with viruses buried in them.
Another IT security firm, Trend Micro has found that Australia was the prime target for malware attack designed to steal online banking information because the country is an 'early adopter' of technology.

Pune-based IT player Zensar Technologies Limited chief executive officer Ganesh Natarajan on Monday said the ailing Indian economy will force the IT companies to stay focused on the traditional IT markets such as US and Europe and avoid the domestic market for some time.

How Intex Tech became a Rs 1,070cr electronics giant

I was bitten by the entrepreneurship bug early in life. Though my father was a foodgrain dealer, I had no interest or intention to follow in his footsteps because I wanted to make a mark of my own. During my college days in the 1980s, there was a huge demand for audio and video cassettes and I decided to exploit this. I figured that it would help me make some pocket money even as I pursued a commerce degree from Delhi University. I started by buying audio cassettes from a wholesale market and trading these at local retail markets, such as Palika Bazaar, South Extension and Chandni Chowk. This did not involve any investment on my part since I was fulfilling retailers' orders and the profits were good—I earned Rs 2,000-3,000 a month.

Two years later, I turned my attention to bigger things. Since I knew most of the electronic equipment in the Indian market was imported from countries like China and Korea, I decided to check the wholesale market in Hong Kong. I saved enough to cover my travel cost and visited the place in 1982, staying with a distant relative. I visited the local markets and made friends with several local hardware dealers.
