By Matt Warman, Consumer Technology Editor, IFA, Berlin

The original Galaxy Note was launched last year at IFA 2011, and despite muted critical reaction the 5” phone and tablet went on to sell surprisingly well.

The updated version improves the stylus that allows users to write notes and select areas on the screen, and also incorporates the success of design features now found in the Galaxy SIII phone. It also increases the screen size to 5.5" without making the device bigger overall.
With Samsung recently ordered by a US court to pay Apple $1billion for copyright infringement, analysts at CCS Insight said that the announcement of improvements to the device in a category of products that Samsung created were “a timely response to criticism that Samsung is a follower not an innovator”. The firm added that the S-Pen stylus is now of “high strategic importance and the Note 2 offers opportunity to truly differentiate in the smartphone market”.

How To chat with certain friends on Facebook

Since we launched Facebook Chat, many of you have asked for ways to organize your connections and to control which friends see you online. Maybe you want to be online with your best friends but offline with your work colleagues. You can now do that by using Friend Lists to filter your connections in Chat.

Friend Lists let you group friends to more easily share with and view information from specific sets of people. You already can use them to filter your home page, send Inbox messages and manage privacy settings.

From the bottom right corner of your browser, go online with Chat and choose which lists you'd like to include in the Chat pane. You can use your existing lists or create new lists directly from Chat.
Creating Lists
To create a new list, simply select the "Friend Lists" menu on the Chat pane, enter a new list name, and drag the names of people you want to include into the list. You can exclude lists from Chat by unchecking them in the "Friend Lists" menu. If you don't want your friends grouped in Chat at all, you can simply uncheck all the Friend Lists, and you'll then see your friends listed alphabetically.

Acer Aspire Timeline U M3-581TG Review

Many Ultrabooks such as the Asus Zenbook UX31E and Toshiba Portege Z830 command a heavy premium for their super-slim design and powerful configuration. Even those that feature less powerful processors and hard drives instead of SSDs are overpriced for the kind of performance they offer. Let’s find out whether Acer’s Aspire Timeline U series has the potential to give its rivals a run for their money.

Features
The base configuration of the Timeline U M3-581TG is quite similar to its smaller sibling, the U M5-481T that features a 14.1-inch display, and a few other models such as the Samsung Series 5. Under the hood is the Intel Core i5-2467M CPU, 4GB of DDR3 memory and a 500GB hard disk. One component that puts this Ultrabook ahead in terms of both performance and value for money is the dedicated graphics processor (hence the letter ‘G’ at the end of the model number). Nvidia GeForce GT640 with 1GB of dedicated memory is decent for gaming, albeit with low to medium settings on the display’s native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The other components that add good value are the fabulous Dolby-certified speakers and the DVD-writer. The M3-581TG comes preloaded with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit.

Swipe 3D Life Tab X74 Review

With a growing amount of Android tablets in the Indian market, it is no surprise now that new manufacturers are seen popping up every now and then with a new range of these 7-inch devices. Almost all are seen with similar hardware specs and features, but just differ in operating system versions and build quality. Similar is the case with California-based Swipe Telecom which entered the Indian market a few months ago with three variants of 7-inch tablets. All three feature similar specifications in terms of hardware, but are slightly different from each other. We have had our hands on the Swipe 3D Life Tab X74 and here is what we found out about the tablet.

Design and build
The tablet has a very good build quality and looks great because of its rounded edges and glossy shell. But the high-gloss won’t last long and will tend to tarnish in no time. The front features three capacitive buttons for Home, Back and Menu, but we noticed the icon for the home button is either misprinted or deliberately marked with four boxes which usually denote the app drawer. Towards the top right is a small status LED which illuminates green for use and red for charge. We did note that this LED turns red whilst charging, which is normal, but remains continuously lit in green even if the device is in use or in standby mode and only turns off when you power off the tablet. This phenomenon can actually drain the battery to quite an extent when in standby mode.'

Google Nexus 7 overclocked to 2GHz, punches well above its weight

The stock Nexus 7 peaks at a 1.3GHz clock speed when it's at full burn. That's certainly good enough for the $199 price tag, but eager adopters have just hit a new record in trying to wring out even more of a bang for the buck. Courtesy of a custom Elite kernel from XDA-Developers' Clemsyn, the Tegra 3 in the mini tablet will scale all the way to a heady 2GHz. You'd be right in suspecting that it leads to some dramatic speed boosts: the Nexus 7 at this pace can put a Transformer Prime to shame in common benchmarks, let alone most smartphones. Reaching the loftier heights of performance does require nerves of steel, however.
The Elite kernel is very much a rough build that the creator doesn't yet trust with the public, and NVIDIA's processor is already known to get toasty under significantly added stress. There's hope a refined kernel will make for a safer venture into unknown territory. If you can't wait to throw at least some caution (and the warranty) to the wind, though, hit the second source link for code that will reach a slightly less melt-prone 1.8GHz.

Facebook Kisses HTML5 Goodbye With Rebuilt iOS App

Facebook has released a new version of its iOS app, one that the company rebuilt from the ground up using Apple's Xcode integrated development environment (IDE).

In doing so, it got rid of HTML5, on which the previous version of its iOS app relied.

The move to native iOS has sped up the app's performance, Facebook stated. While HTML5 allowed the social network's devs to leverage much of the same code across iOS, Android and the mobile Web, among other things, it wasn't especially fast.

"There's a real preference for native apps due to performance and the ability to access native features on the device," Michael King, director of enterprise strategy  at Appcelerator, told TechNewsWorld.
"There is likely a disillusionment phase for HTML5 where the technology behind some apps may get reworked in native platforms," remarked Al Hilwa, program director, applications development software, at IDC. "Anyone who thought that HTML5 was a panacea for mobile development is probably reconsidering that."

iBall Andi 3e Review

iBall has been in the market for almost a decade now. After manufacturing computer peripherals such as power supplies, input devices, PC cases, speakers, and much more, it entered the tablet and mobile phone market. iBall has a handful of budget mobile phones and Android phones. From the Andi Smart segment of smartphones by iBall, we recently reviewed the Andi 4d. This time it is the Andi 3e in our lab. Let’s see what this one has to offer.

Design and Build
The Andi 3e is very similar to the Andi 4d, but shorter with more rounded edges. It has a completely glossy shell, and is bundled for free with interchangeable back panels. The glossy shell gets a lot of fingerprints, which means it needs to be wiped all the time, leading to scratches on it. The build quality is pretty rugged, and the shell is very sturdy. The dark brown body has a chrome lining all around the frame, which gives it a good look. The front face features a 3.2-inch display panel with capacitive touch buttons for Home, Menu, Back, and Search. Below the buttons is a translucent silver bar or strip. It is lit by a few colour-changing LEDs that illuminate while booting, or when an SMS or e-mail is received. The rear sports a 3.2MP camera but there is no flash for night shots. The right side features the volume rocker and a camera button, while the left has the micro USB port. The top features the earphone jack. The phone is fuelled by a 1400mAh battery. You can expect an average talk time or video playback of around 6 to 8 hours. The standby time is 400 hours approximately.

Microsoft launches new logo after 25 years

Microsoft will use a new logo for the first time in over two and a half decades. The software titan has created a new logo which has been heavily inspired by the emblem of Windows operating system. This change in the logo also shows the company's focus on the tile-centric Metro interface, which it uses in the Windows Phone platform, XBOX 360 and the upcoming Windows 8 and Office suite.
On the Microsoft Blog on TechNet, Jeff Hansen, the general manager of brand strategy at the company, said that this step will ensure that a consistent user experience can be delivered across all platforms, from PCs and phones to tablets and television. Rather than the previous emblem, which only had the name of the company, this new logo has 'Microsoft' written in Segoe font on the right and square with four tiles, reminiscent of the Metro UI, on the left.

Buy A Windows 7 PC And Get Windows 8 Pro For $14.99

You can now buy a Windows 7 PC and get Windows 8 Pro for $14.99, which sounds more like an advertising spiel rather than a news headline. Well, it’s bit of both. There’s no gimmickry though as the full copy of the special offer just reads “If you buy a qualified Windows 7 PC between June 2, 2012 and January 31, 2013, you can purchase a download of Windows 8 Pro at a special promotional price”. The special promotional price is $14.99, though it can vary slightly according to the region.
The logic behind the offer could be that it is designed to tempt consumers not to put off their purchase of Windows 7 in anticipation of the Windows 8 launch. Windows 7 has been (and continues to be) a popular selling operating system for Microsoft, and the guys from Redmond wouldn’t want an anticipated upgrade to cannibalize their present star-seller. It is also good for consumers because we all know the feeling of buying something, and then watching from the sidelines as a newer version comes out.

How to Send A Direct Message To All Your Twitter Followers

Many applications have come and gone that allowed you to send a direct message to all your twitter followers. Twitter recently reduced the number of Direct Messages you can send in one day to 250. That leaves the market for automated direct message sending with less competition.
You can manually send a direct message to other Twitter users, but it's to laborious to use that method if you have thousands of followers. To send a direct message to all your followers you need to use Tweetadder. You can download Tweetadder from the resource link section below. Tweetadder automates the direct message process so you set it up once and forget about it.

Download and Install Tweetadder (link in resource section below)

Open Tweetadder and add your Twitter account.

Under Message Settings type in the number of direct messages you want to send per day (less than 250).

Next click on the automation tab.

Click the check box "do the following tasks each day at" and select at time

Select the check box - Automatically send messages

Sit back and relax, Tweetadder will send your Direct Message to all your followers at a rate of 250 (or less) per day until they have all received your message.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) vs Acer Iconia Tab A510

Acer Iconia Tab A510 has been released a couple of days ago and costs a reasonable $450 price tag, being an Olympic-themed tablet, as Acer being the partner of London Olympics. Equipped with a speedy quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 on board, it comes with a 10-inch 1280 x 800 TFT LCD display, a generous 32 GB built-in storage space and 1GB of RAM.
These have started to become standard specs for top-rated Android-powered tablets. Acer Iconia Tab A510 is relatively heavy with its 680 grams, no flash for camera but a good battery life rated at 10 hours of usage. Probably its main advantage is the Tegra 3 quad-core processor, which means is a great option for anyone out there shopping for an Android 4.0 tablet offering blazing performance and log term battery life.

Description and Features of Phablet

As our smartphones continue to grow in size, with the latest screens pushing close to five inches, a new class of device has arrived – the “phablet”.
What exactly is a phablet? It’s a device that is too large to be considered a phone but too small to be considered a tablet. As a general rule of thumb, this covers devices that have a screen size between 5 and 7 inches.

The first such device of this size is the Samsung GALAXY Note. With a screen size of 5.3 inches, it fits squarely in the phablet category.
A Phablet makes a good phone
The Note runs Android 2.3, so it can do all of the things a normal smartphone does. It can make phone calls, send text messages, browse the web, run apps from the Google Play store, and take pictures. It also comes with a stylus, or pen if you like, that lets you write on the screen for better input precision (it gives the phone a bit of a nostalgic feel, bringing back the old days of the Palm Treo). Samsung has also included some apps that make special use of the pen.
As a tablet – not so much
While the device does have a lot of extra screen real estate, it’s not as expansive as a tablet. The larger size does make browsing the web, reading documents and watching videos more enjoyable, but it’s not as good as the experience you’ll get on a tablet.

What is a Phablet?

A phablet, as the name suggests, is a device that combines the voice-calling capabilities of a smartphone with the larger display sizes of a tablet. Bigger than a smartphone, but not large enough to be a tablet, the screen size of a phablet falls in the 5″ to 7″ region. Another feature that defines a phablet is the presence and use of a stylus pen. The larger size and the light and thin quality of such devices eliminate the need to carry around the comparatively bulkier tablet.
Just to clear things up, the 5.3″ Samsung Galaxy Note is considered a phablet, whereas the ASUS Padfone, with a phone that docks into a tablet casing to then be used as a tablet, is not a phablet. The idea of a phablet is to be able to enjoy the best of both worlds, without needing additional devices (or device casings in the case of the Padfone).

Julia Child's 100th Birthday Google Doodle

The scene in our living room in the early ‘60s will be familiar to many. I can picture my dad sitting in his chair, glued to the new black-and-white miracle of technology in our house, watching The French Chef... for the sheer fun of the show. Fast-forward nearly 15 years and I would find myself, as a young student at La Varenne cooking school in Paris, standing in front of Julia Child herself. At that first meeting, for a moment, I had Julia’s undivided attention and her intent interest in my goals and plans as a cook. (Happily, that encounter would lead to opportunities to work as a member of Julia’s team, to travel with her around the U.S. and in France, and to a treasured friendship until her death in 2004. I would even become executive director of that esteemed cooking school – due, in large measure, to her influence and support.) Countless times throughout the years that’s the scene which would became familiar to me – Julia engaging and encouraging both professional chefs and home cooks. She would rarely leave a restaurant without a visit to the kitchen or exit a book signing without having communed with everyone in line; she was an active mentor to many of us.
Julia was so approachable that people felt they knew her – no one hesitated to stride right up and start a conversation – and in fact, they did know her. After all, she’d been in our living rooms taking us by the hand in the kitchen for years. (Ever-embracing of new technologies, I believe Julia would be thrilled to know that she’s now literally in people’s hands, on digital devices.) But more than that, what people saw on camera was what they’d experience in person. It was all pure Julia.

India's national bird, the peacock, adorns the Google home page on India's Independence Day. The peacock curves its neck backwards to form the 'G' of the Google logo. The other letters of the Google logo appear in ornate styling behind the peacock's plume.
Google has been commemorating India's Independence Day with a doodle on its home page since 2003. Most of the Google doodles had the Indian national flag as the inspiration. But the 2011 and 2012 doodles used other national symbols in place of the Tricolour. Last year a sketch of Delhi's Red Fort took guard on the Google home page on 15th August.

Google fined $22.5M for latest privacy breakdown

Google is paying a $22.5 million fine to settle the latest regulatory case questioning the Internet search leader's respect for people's privacy and the integrity of its internal controls.
The penalty announced Thursday by the Federal Trade Commission matches the figure reported by The Associated Press and other media outlets last month. It's the most that the FTC has ever fined a company for a civil violation.

The rebuke resolves the FTC's allegations that Google Inc. duped millions of Web surfers who use Apple Inc.'s Safari browser.
Google had assured people that it wouldn't monitor their online activities, as long as they didn't change the browser settings to permit the tracking.
Google broke that promise, according to the FTC, by creating a technological loophole that enabled the company's DoubleClick advertising network to shadow unwitting Safari users. That tracking gave DoubleClick a better handle on what kinds of marketing pitches to show them.

New iPhone app checks your heart rate by reading your face

Aerobic fitness is one of the best ways to get — and stay — in shape. It requires getting your heart rate up, but it's also important to keep track of your pulse so that it stays within a helpful range and you don't end up over-doing it. A new app from a pair of MIT graduates can help you do it using only your iPhone or iPod touch.
Rather than rely on a cumbersome sensor band, the Cardiio app (download for iPhone) uses the iPhone's front-facing iSight camera to scan your face and determine your pulse. This works because as your heart rate increases, more blood is pumped to your face, and as it is the amount of ambient light your face reflects decreases. The Cardiio app is able to detect these variations in reflectiveness and use them to determine your pulse within three beats per minutes, according to its creators, husband and wife PhD team Ming-Zer and Yukkee Poh.

Google deserves a great applause for creating an awareness about the Olympic sports through it’s artistically designed doodles and interactive games.
